Art/Photo Workshop in Tanzania
In October 2010 Gelato!Art Salon was invited to host an art/photo workshop at the Cultural Centre "El Taller de Pilar" in the town of Ifakara (Tanzania).
One of the goal of Gelato!Art Salon was to develop potential artistic talent in children, as well as to promote networking between national and foreign associations with similar aims. An added objective was to increase employment by the sale of art and crafts created in accordance with principles of sustainability.
The general aim of the workshop was to introduce basic elements of photography and teach the students how to create a photo project. Through the classes the students explored photography elements such as portraiture, photo composition with digital and film cameras. The students also had free time to experience photography outside the class in order to learn how to create a story through images.
The following photos are a selection of the photos that the students from the Cultural Centre took during the workshop.
The students have chosen two project to work on:
Life at the Kilombero River
The Ifakara's Dump
Every person in the class had chosen one of the theme and shot it with a disposable camera from a different prospective. At the end of the workshop we edit and exhibit the photographs.
It was a very moving experience because we were able to discover the life in Ifakara through their eyes.
All the following photos are for sale. The income will be sent to the Cultural Centre "El Taller de Pilar". If you want to know more about our experience and the photo project in Ifakara please watch the video on the following link:

Life at the Kilombero River
Kilombero river divides Kilombero District and Ulanga District in the Morogoro Region in Tanzania. There isn't any bridge that connects the riversides, only a boat departing every 30 mins. Once a boat sunk and a lot of people died.
The river is about 5 km away from the town of Ifakara. The road is situated in a vast floodplain. When the flood comes the road is inaccessible.
The Kilombero river is a big resource of fish for Ifakara. Unfortunately because of the lack of work many young fishers, instead of going to school, are sent from the family to fish early in the morning. River has been used also for domestic use of water. Local people go there everyday to wash clothes, dishes and cars.

Ifakara's Dump
In Ifakara the dump lays in the center of the town, behind the market. People complain because the garbage is almost never collected and they are compelled to live close by it and deal with it everyday.Three months before we went, people protested and finally the truck came to pick up the garbage, but then after it never came back. Women cook next to it, kids play over it, chicken feed on it.
Everyday in the town, in order to get rid of the garbage, people burn it.
