Happy Holidays to All and a Very Happy New Year!!!

A Trail of Pigment

In other news, our friend and Gelato! members Kiritin Beyer and Parris Jaru have returned from their trip to India have sent us some images and stories.

One beautiful thing that happened to them along the way was connecting with an artist from India who had attended one of our Gelato! art Salons in New York, and became inspired to produce one of her own in her home town of Pune, India.

That is possibly one of the most amazing things we could have heard this year!

Here´s Kiritin and Parris´ description of the event:

A Trail of Pigment & Good Artist of Pune, Exhibition.
Date: November 1st & 2nd 2014 at TIFA Working Studios in Pune, India.

The exhibition was a collaboration with the “The Good Artist of Pune Art Collective” in a pop-up gallery (Gelato Style) at the “TIFA Working Studios” (a raw space that is being converted into a artist residency) in Pune. The goal of this "Pop Up" gallery exhibition was to gather the young artists of Pune and create art using natural colors as a theme, the natural colors were mixed with a gum-based resin and the walls were primed with limestone.

This movement which has brought talented artists from all spheres, be it paintings, frescos, glass art, sculpture, etc. has also led to a far better and more meaningful understanding of creation and to spotlight the significance of the art community in Pune.

The art exchange was an amazing experience! India has so many talented artists and so much creativity. We felt a true enthusiasm and appetite for sharing an artistic experience.
It was a total blessing.

Our friends Gessica and Valentina,  two young Choreograpers and dancers from Italy have assembled a powerful and  engaging team of professional dancers.

We were excited to have them perform an excerpt from their show at our closing art reception for Parris Jaru in January The brought a beautiful and inventive to the BAM Fisher theatre this year. Details are below

"DISONNECT: a journey into the depths of the human psyche told through dance.

From the ladies who brought you I Am What I Am Not, Unbearable, Reft, and Reft II comes CodRosso's next exploration of the most intimate corners of the human experience.  DISCONNECT will take you on a very unique ride, following the delicately woven story of six women who are searching
for each other while searching for their own identities in the cold desolation of the modern age.

Through performance, Codice Rosso aims to pose a number of questions: What do we really know about ourselves?
What happens when we can no longer find each other?
In a world that can feel so cold and dark, how do we find the light in other people?

Being an international ensemble of female artists--including dancers from Italy, Japan, and the United States--
we use our immensely diverse technical backgrounds and personal stories to answer these questions through a rather unique, multi-cultural lens.

Putting the textbook explanation aside: it's an hour-long wild ride filled with really cool music and some extraordinary movement!
We have a story to share, and we want to take you along for the journey.  Don't miss out on this one-of-a-kind evening of dance, drama, and artistic upheaval!"

Our friend Danielle has been very busy this past year, and when she sent an email with a newsletter of her accomplishments of the past 365,, we just had to include it and send her our congratulations and acknowledgments of her continued successes.  The letter was way back in February, so we're sure she has even more things to add to the list by now.

Here are just a some of the highlights from her very productive year

                                                       Danielle Guldin Presents
The Past 388 Days of My Life

* January 2012 marked my co-producerial debut with the wild success of The Gowanus Art Fair: Keeping it Small (a Collective, BK project).  An evening of 5 live bands, 5 one-act plays, 5 performance artists, and 15 curated artists .*  In addition to co-producing the event, I played the lead role of Eve in The Hunter Story, as part of the one-act play festival.

* Just in time for Sundance 2012, I performed the integral role of Sarah for James Franco's NYU Tisch test shoot of One of the Muses, directed by Alexis Gambis. In February, I made the life-changing choice to begin studying acting with the esteemed Jennifer Gelfer at the Haymarket Annex Master Class in New York City.

* In September, I booked a commercial for MyCharge, which can be seen all over!  (Watch it here: http://vimeo.com/52545818)

October, I landed a leading role as Cpl. Maria France-Comeau on the hit show Deadly Sins.  My episode, entitled Commander and Thief, aired on the Investigation Discovery (ID) Channel

* In December, I shot a commerical for FELTRAIGER, an uber-chic clothing boutique in Soho.
 (Watch it here: http://vimeo.com/57294608)

* In January, I was thrilled to portray the ER Resident Physician on an episode of the HIT high-profile webseries In Between Men, written/created by Quincy Morris and directed by Jennifer Gelfer.  Season 1 of In Between Men has over 2 million hits on YouTube.  Season 2 premiered on 2/12, and is currently available on iTunes.  (Check it out here: http://www.inbetweenmen.tv)

* Just yesterday, 2/13, Bobby Funaro (The Sopranos, American Gangster) called me in for a last-minute cold reading of the wonderful new play, Aria (Pure Puccini), by the incredible writer Jo Ann Tedesco.  Follwing the reading, I was repeatedly congratulated and welcomed to "the family."  Overall, I am honored to have read among such esteemed talent, and excited to continue working on this gorgeous new project.

* Last, but certainly not least, I have continued to make regular appearances on the QVC Network as a cosmetic model for the forever-fab Laura Geller, the creator of Laura Geller Cosmetics.  Laura and her international make-up artist Johnny Ottovino were the wonderful duo who gave me my first television job 3 years ago, and it's a pleasure to continue working with them.

Much love and thanks goes out to my insurmountable network of friends and colleauges who continue to support me on this journey.  The past 388 days have been a wild ride, and I'm looking forward to every adventure that awaits! I'm wishing all of you a wonderful year filled with love, health, success, and wealth.

XX,
 dd.

Studio Reynard's new project
 Reynard the Fox

Picture
Our friend Anastacia has been collaborating with Helene Lesterlin in puppetry and theatre. We attended this Spring a fundraising dinner and presentation of their new project and studio. It was a an amazing 3 course dinner and packed with good company. We are looking forward supporting their new staging of Reynard the fox, when it's up andd running, and we encourage everyone to follow their efforts!

Hedgehog in the Fog by Yuri Norstein, 1975.

"I showed this at our launch event, and I thought I’d post the link for those who missed it! Stop motion animation, anthropomorphic animals, magically beautiful… what more could you want? It inspires us as we figure out how we want to stage the story of Reynard the fox, that smooth operator, not as animation but as object theater". Helene

Anastacia Bolina and Helene Lesterlin are joining forces to create a performance of satiric object theater based on the darkly funny medieval escapades of Reynard the Fox. A mix of video, puppetry, live sound and moving objects. MARCH 16th at 8pm Studio Reynard Saugerties NY STUDIO REYNARD
Directed by Hélène Lesterlin, Studio Reynard is a space for the creation and production of performances, installations and other art projects at the intersection of contemporary dance, theater, video and sound. The creative practice embodied by Studio Reynard crosses boundaries: artist/curator, live performance/visual art, sound/video, dance/text. Nimble and wily, Studio Reynard is inspired by its protagonist mascot – the fox.

Shirah Neumann - New Works

Picture
Shirah is a very talented painter who have worked with our collective many times. We are very happy to follow her progress and announce her new works and upcoming exhibitions. Her art is selling well and you may see more of it on her website.

Please forward all requests or inquiries about sales or commissions to he email below. Thanks!

Dear Friends and Family,

I am writing with several updates for you.

Firstly, I am offering for a short time the availability of prints of two of my paintings. Many of you have shown interest in owning one of my paintings and this is perhaps a more affordable way to do so! Clouds (2012) and Tavern (with Françoise Hardy) (2013). The prints are 16”x16” and are available for $50 which includes shipping. Please note, this is a special and limited offer: you may certainly share it with friends, but I ask of you that no public announcements be made (Facebook, etc). The sale of these prints will be a huge help for me to support new projects in my studio this Summer. For sales and inquiries please email me at shirah.rivka@gmail.com.

I am pleased to announce my invitation to participate in Maine College of Art’s 2013 Alumni Biennial Exhibition. This group show of six wonderful artists will take place in the Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland, Maine. It will kick off with an opening on August 24 from 6-8PM and run through October 13. Future shows (mark your calendars way in advance!) include a solo show at the Museums on the Green in Falmouth, Massachusetts from May 10-June 14, 2014 and participation in Greenhut Galleries’ biennial Portland Show April 3-26, 2014.

My last bit of news is that I updated my website (Garden, which was recently on display at the Lewis Gallery in the Portland Public Library, and several other new pieces). More updates to come later in the summer with new paintings (and maybe some works on paper, too!)

Warmly,

Shirah

Claire Hallereau, Erika Latta and Bertie Ferdman curated
MARS@BKLYN!

Picture

Our friend Claire organized with her partners cross cultural art show betweeen Brooklyn and Marseille in  April/ May. . Check their site for upcoming shows

"Dear Friends,

I have told you about the project I am co-curating with Erika Latta and Bertie Ferdman : mars2bklyn.This idea of creating an artistic bridge between Marseille and Brooklyn came to me when I moved to Marseille in 2009. I saw many parallels between the two cities, and some interesting differences too, and the link seemed obvious. Well, this idea would not have gone any further without the incredible determination, connections and hard work of my two partners in crime, Erika and Bertie.

And now, we are thrilled to premiere Phase 1 of the festival this coming April 29-May 4, 2013 with such great partners as Residency Unlimited, The Powerhouse Arena, The Irondale Center, CPR - center for performance research, The Cultural Services of the French Embassy (FUSED), Institut Français and Pernod-Ricard.

You can see the full program on our website : www.mars2bklyn.org. Among other events, there will be an exhibition at Powerhouse Arena in Dumbo with artists from the two cities, and a performance by Begat Theater : Hidden Stories. I can only recommend that you reserve tickets for Hidden Stories on our website very quickly because the capacity is limited and it is a brilliant experience (indeed we would not have invested so much time and energy in bringing them from overseas if this wasn't an outstanding show).

TaIking about time and energy, this first phase of mars2bklyn is made on a shoestring budget. We have all invested some of our own money and we are still missing 9000 € to make it happen. A short month away from the launch of the festival, this is a bit scary, but this will not stop us !  This leads me to announce the launch our FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN on Indiegogo (click here).  Please take a moment to watch the video and make a donation in any amount to contribute to the mars2bklyn platform, and come enjoy the festival.

I will be sending you more info about the various events and about the opening party very soon. Very sadly, I still do not know at this point if I will be able to fly to Brooklyn to join you all, but we are hoping this first phase will lead to many more, both in Marseille and Brooklyn, and throughout the year.

I look forward to seeing you very soon (if not in Brooklyn at the end of the month, maybe later this year or anytime in Marseille).

Lots of love and joy to each and everyone of you !

Expressions Dance Magazine Gala featuring works from Gisella Sorrentino and renowned Italian photographer Alessio Buccafusca

MOSTRA FOTOGRAFICA
Venerdì 17 e sabato 18 maggio
Teatro Alighieri

Her Humanity a Casa Frela Gallery (New York City, 2007).

Txuca's first solo photography exhibition in Berlin

Picture
Txuca is a dear friend and long standing Gelato! friend and member, who consistently wow's us with her quality photography, drive, ambition and charm. Her first solo show in Berlin happened this year, and we send our Congratulations!

Dear friends,

I am pleased to announce you my first solo exhibition in Berlin, Shall We Dance at ESDIP Berlin. A photography project made in collaboration with urban artist Suso33. An iconographic and luminic stage where the creative process takes place. Attached is the press release with more info. The opening reception will be on Friday, March 29th from 8pm to 12am. If you are in the area, please come by and join us for an arts vernissage, music, drinks and good company!

ESDIP Berlin is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of photography by Txuca from March 29 2013. The exhibition marks the first presentation of her work in Germany. Txuca is a portrait photographer of individuals and performing arts, born in Madrid. She is a visual creator communicating with the viewer by transmitting feelings and moods. “Attracted by the magic of body language and creation, my artistic practice is based on experimental portraits of
bodies articulating creative actions. Through a use of time and movement, the motion of my subject merges with my own to create a complete composition. Precise choreography or spontaneous movement are both used depending on the subject – the main focus is to capture portraits of the creative process in action. This interest in the human figure and its movements has led me to doing self-portraits as another body of work related to my anthropomorphic studies.”

Txuca's exhibition Shall We Dance in ESDIP Berlin presents seven ink jet photographic prints in black and white. The series is a motion project between artist Suso33 and Txuca. In this series the artist performs under unusual circumstances. Instead of on-stage for an audience or in a public space, a carefully designed, intimate setting is created by the photographer for the action to occur. Once the dance begins, interaction between photographer and artist results in a dialogue captured to form the final piece of art: Shall we Dance. thru to April 11th,

Jordan McLeans's Sound Chemistry Records

Picture
Jordan and I have been friends since way back when, back from when I held my first large scale multimedia show called REMAIN 5 Day of Myths and Rituals. He's gone on to ever higher musical levels and professional positions, including Assistant Music Director for FELA KUTI The MUSICAL. I'm sooo happy to introduce you to his latest project, and new company Sound Chemistry Records. Be sure to check his website and see his band Droids play when their in town!

Press Release, March, 2013

Sound Chemistry Records, Company Launch

Just when it seemed like the worst time in history to start a record company, Jordan McLean and Amir Ziv, two busy New York-based musicians, saw an opportunity. They knew a vast array of musicians, had the industry contacts, and could recognize the possibilities for endless new collaborative projects. They also knew people were buying fewer and fewer CDs, and that vinyl, a format the two were determined to help resurrect, is a microscopic share of the market. They turned for advice to Jac Holzman, founder of Elektra Records (who signed Judy Collins, The Doors, Queen, Iggy Pop, Carly Simon among many others). Holzman told them “Pretend you’re right, and go ahead.”

Since then the two have been traveling with a mobile recording unit to capture recordings by musicians from free-jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman to 6 year-old punk rocker Butterfly Starpower. After a particularly fruitful session with Coleman, featuring Ziv on drums and McLean on trumpet/electronics, the master himself affirmed their vision. “You’re speaking a new language!” he told them, “and you’re masters of it.”

Seeking a name that transcended genre, the two called their company Sound Chemistry Records, producing a series of audiophile-quality downloads and 180 gram vinyl steeped in the movements of electronica, punk rock, classical, American roots, and avant-garde jazz, forging an identity as diverse and challenging as the city Sound Chemistry calls home.

Concert Meister Series featuring DanzaNova

Picture
Simona De Feo is putting together high level classical music concerts at elegant paces around the world, and working with the top performers in the field. This spring she held another show here in New York at Baruch College. More to come!

The Concert Meister Series, a collaboration between Baruch Performing Arts Center and Legato Productions,

The Concert Meister Series proudly announces an electrifying performance of Resident Composer, Ronn Yedidia's works and his world music ensemble, DanzaNova, Friday, February 1st at 8:00 PM at Baruch Performing Arts Center located at 55 Lexington Avenues (with entrance on east 25th Streeet between 3rd and Lexington Avenues) in New York City.

DanzaNova is a virtuoso world/folk/klezmer quintet formed by composer/accordionist Ronn Yedidia in 2009. The other 4 members of DanzaNova include violinist Dmitriy Fisch, guitarist Giacomo La Vita, bassist Eddy Khaimovich and percussionist Yuval Edoot. The ensemble explores and performs ethnic dance music originating mainly from the Middle East, Eastern & Central Europe and Latin America. In addition, Ronn Yedidia has composed a series of his own dance tunes entitled KlezDances especially for DanzaNova.

The quintet's emphasis is on stylistic versatility and chamber unity, and the players display their many creative abilities in segments of original free improvisation - blending ethnic and contemporary elements, and executing them with idiosyncratic virtuosity.

DanzaNova has performed at Merkin Hall, Bargemusic, ArtEcho Center, and Watchung Arts Center.  The Epoch Times stated "it was pure ethnic music which left the audience ecstatic with boundless pleasure!"

The Epoch Times referred to DanzaNova as "...pure ethnic music, which left the audience ecstatic with boundless pleasure!"

Ismael Wonder is a charismatic African singer-songwriter with a penetrating voice and musical talents that span the guitar, flute and harmonica. His original compositions, sung in Bambara, Peuhl, Arabic, and French, draws from the Mandingo traditions of his native western Africa, as well as reggae and Afrobeat.  Wonder's music takes us on a unique journey through the rich and diverse confluences of Africa and Europe.

Wonder recorded his first reggae album, “Generations,” in 1993, when he was fourteen years old. Camara Production later brought him to France in 1998 to record “Toubi.” He has toured throughout Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Europe. More recently, Wonder's music has evolved from his well-acclaimed reggae roots towards a more intimate sound that takes inspiration from his Mandingo or West African world.

He plays regularly with world-renowned master of the n'goni, lute Badje Tounkara, Makan Cissoko on the tamani (talking drum) and calebasse, Narjess Saad and Caroline Zaini on percussion, Stephane Tayeb on guitar, and Neil Leveugle on bass.

Viking Rappers SLINCRAZE play NOoSPHERE

The Huffington Post, June 12, 2013: “Interesting. Unusual. Uniquely NYC.
The NYC-ARTS top five is your cheat sheet to what's hot before it hits the radar. (…) Here are our picks for the week of June 11 through 17:

Viking Rappers: from New York to the North Pole at NOoSPHERE:
Photographer Martin Johansen and director Simen Braathen spent the last two years following Norwegian rap artists to document what happens when different music and cultures mix. Braathen's film "Máze Represent!" tells the story of how Slincraze -- a rap group from a small Arctic village -- uses hip-hop to fight negative stereotypes and bring back their dying language. At the gallery's sneak preview (exhibition opens in the fall), Slincraze will perform live in a language spoken by fewer than 15,000 people on earth."

Also, a shout-out to the artists in Kingsize, Scandinavia's Largest Hip Hop Magazine: Fotoutstilling i New York om norsk rap

Sneak preview opening reception tonight: Fri, June 14, 6-9pm
Special performance by Sami rappers Slincraze

NOoSPHERE is located at 251 East Houston Street, btw. Norfolk and Suffolk Streets.

Mind Games. Everyone plays them, mostly with themselves. Black Scale brings out their long-time fam DJ Synapse, for their April mix to bring you Mind Games. These are the Mind Games of DJ Synapse, a New York stalwart, and brand developer of 15 years. The songs in this mix were blended live with two Technics, a Rane mixer and Pioneer EFX-500 box. The songs were completely new to Synapse when he mixed them, so it’s an improvisational affair. After blending the songs (22 in 30 minutes), Synapse laid his cut, paste and scratch flavor, to the mix, something he has always been known for. These Mind Games are an attempt at a new way of looking at mixing.

KATY GUNN Video Release Party @ NOoSPHERE!

Picture

Katy is part of the NOoSHERE family of artists and dear friend, she's one of the most dynamic and versatile performers we've seen in quite awhile. Check her out, and see her live!

Katy Gunn, NOoSPHERE’s very favorite singer/songwriter/pianist/fiddle player, has just releasedConsequences, her first ever music video. This catchy tune is from her first solo album Beautiful Things (available on Itunes). Katy describes her sound as “Fiona Apple and Ella Fitzgerald drinking coffee while Bjork makes pancakes”.

Now living in Berlin, Katy is back in NYC for a few days for this special occasion: There will be wine, friendly people, art, a screening of the video (the directors, James Martinez and Carlos Santiago will be there!) AND a live performance by our very own Katy Gunn. It will be a bit before she returns to New York again, so this is your chance to come catch a rising star!

"Improvised Music at a Purposeful HomeShapeShifter Lab Celebrates One-Year Anniversary"

By NATE CHINEN
Published: May 30, 2013

SKYE STEELE had just raced through an intricate tune called “Man-Made Nemesis” last week at ShapeShifter Lab when he tucked his violin under one arm, issuing an invitation in the form of an order. All the musicians in the audience — he called out half a dozen by name — were implored to join his band, the Railroad Rodia, for a chantlike finale.

In short order the stage got crowded. The well-traveled drummers Richie Barshay and Satoshi Takeishi took up hand percussion in one corner. Sharing the piano bench were Cat Toren, who had already played a set with her band, and Shoko Nagai, who was about to play a duo set with Mr. Takeishi. The scene suggested a messy utopia, full of earnest intention but free of a targeted objective.

To some extent that moment seemed emblematic of ShapeShifter Lab, the upstart, musician-run Brooklyn club that has become a vital part of the city’s jazz ecosystem. Since opening last spring on an obscure side street where the Park Slope and Gowanus neighborhoods overlap, it has been home to hundreds of performances by a broad assortment of artists working somewhere in the realm of improvised music.

“From the first time I played there, it just felt like, ‘Wow, this is fantastic,’ ” said the guitarist and producer David Torn, who was among the club’s early adopters. “When I have a choice of where I’m going to bring a band in New York, that’s the place.”
